Georgios Kontogeorgis is the new Head of CERE. This was announced at the CERE Annual Discussion Meeting 2014 held on 25-27 June, at the Comwell Hotel in Snekkersten. More than 100 participants from different countries, including members from more than 30 different companies, met to network and share the latest research results.

A 3D simulation in the Virtual Reality Room, a software workshop introducing the newest software models and an announcement of Georgios Kontogeorgis as the new Head of CERE – this marked the beginning of this year’s Discussion Meeting. The programme also offered lectures from PhDs and industry partners along with poster presentations from PhD-students. The sessions covered many areas ranging from thermodynamics, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and high pressure/high temperature (HP/HT) activities, gas hydrates and CO2 capture and geology/geophysics.

                                                      Passing on the torch

The broad ranging areas within CERE is something that Scientific Director and Head of DTU Chemistry, Erling H. Stenby, believes makes the centre strong;

CERE has expanded greatly over the past years to become what it is today; a strong centre with a high professional level that combines knowledge from across disciplines. Personally, it’s a strange feeling leaving a position I have had for 20 years ”, says Erling and continues, “however, I’m pleased to be passing on the position to Georgios, who is a competent and energetic leader with whom I’ve had a great collaboration over the years”.

Although Erling will no longer be the Head of CERE, he will still be very much involved in the centre. “This is not a goodbye speech”, said Erling during the announcement, as he will continue to be a part of the Steering Committee and Faculty of CERE.

Benefitting from the knowledge mix

Dengen Zhou, who is Senior Advisor for Gas EOR at Chevron in Houston, believes that the broadness of expertise in CERE also adds value to the meetings. “It’s a talented group with a broad range of expertise. They are able to break the problems of industry down into fundamentals and, in this way, attack the problems in the right way”, says Dengen. According to Dengen, who has participated in numerous Discussion Meetings over the years, one of the most important reasons for his visits is that it gives him an opportunity to learn ‘what’s new’ in his field and to interact with experts coming from various disciplines.

Moving forward together

The future of CERE is, according to Georgios Kontogeorgis, not only determined by its future leader, but also the hard work of previous centre leaders and the collaboration between colleagues across disciplines.

"It is both a great honour and a great responsibility to take over the leadership of CERE. I have been an active member of, previously IVC-SEP, and now CERE for more than 15 years and I have seen the centre grow and develop into what it is today. Without doubt, much of this success is owed to its previous centre leaders, professors Aage Fredenslund and Erling Stenby who led the centre for over 30 years, but also to Peter Rasmussen who secured the transition in difficult times. I am confident that I can contribute, with the help of faculty, researchers and staff associated with CERE, to its future development in the many years to come", says Georgios.

Georgios Kontogeorgis is the new Head of CERE starting 1 July 2014.
