Welcome to our new Ph.D. student Laura Paci

Laura completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Siena, Italy. She then pursued a MSc in Geoscience and Geotechnologies at the University of Pisa, Italy.

Her research work there involved exploring several aspects of geothermal energy, including potential environmental hazards related to the operation of a geothermal plant and geological 3D modelling of a geothermal reservoir.

In February 2014, Laura started working at the University of Pisa as a research assistant. Her research concerned understanding the geologic, stratigraphic and hydrogeological patterns of the Pisa Basin (Tuscany, Italy) and elaborating 3D models of the main aquifers in the study area.

In September 2015, Laura was employed at Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, DTU as a technical assistant and worked on Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) and geothermal reservoir modelling.

In late 2016, Laura started a doctoral research project at DTU with the title “Feasibility of geothermal energy extraction from medium depth Danish limestone aquifers”.

The aim of this project is to demonstrate the successful employment of thermal energy storage underground in the subsurface of Zealand with a focus on limestone formations and to identify the best locations where such technology could be applied.

The current study plan focuses on:

  • Evaluating how the porosity, permeability and elasticity are distributed in the
    limestones of Zealand;
  • Assessing how the limestones respond to cyclic thermal stress due to the extraction
    of geothermal energy and thermal heat storage.

Laura is supervised by Ida Lykke Fabricius and works in building 119, room 169.
