The 14th PPEPPD 2016, International Conference on Properties and Phase Equilibria for Product and Process Design took place in Porto, Portugal, 22-26 May.

CERE was represented with five participants; Alay Arya, Anders Schlaikjer, Andre Vinhal, Christos Tsanas and Georgios Kontogeorgis.

With 311 participants from 36 countries, 15 distinguished lectures, 36 oral sessions and 207 posters there were lots of opportunities of communication between academic and industrial researchers.

“The first thing to draw my attention was the quality and international character of the participants, crucial features for development of the field, since the problems we’re facing are becoming more and more complex. Another important aspect of the event was the broadness of topics involved, from quantum mechanics to process design, allowing constructive discussions between people of different areas of thermodynamics. It was also noteworthy the good balance between academia and industry, in which works in both fundamental and applied research were presented. Finally, it is necessary to mention the remarkable set of social activities prepared by the committee, building bridges between people and providing further partnerships for researches and developments.

PPEPPD 2016 proved me that a stronger connection between people is essential for finding solutions to the needs of society. Although it was my first participation, and hopefully not the last, I have already been affected by it, as many of the ideas and suggestions from colleagues will be implemented in my research”. (Andre Vinhal)

"Participating in the 14th International Conference on Properties and Phase Equilibria for Product and Process Design in Porto, Portugal, was an unforgettable experience. There could not be a better opportunity for a PhD student in the field of Thermodynamics to observe the way different groups of this international community interact with each other”.
“An international conference organized every three years - in 2019, PPEPPD will be held in Vancouver, Canada. It was such an amazing event, that they got us already thinking about our next participation” (Christos Tsanas)

“It has been a precious experience to be at the PPEPPD conference in Portugal where I got an opportunity to listen to various veterans and experts of different disciplines. It gave me the complete idea of the present research in the world of thermodynamics. There were presentations on different topics like quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics and phase equilibria showing the application of thermodynamics in different fields including oil, biomass, polymer and pharmaceutical. The Poster session was very interactive where I could present my work and get fruitful feedback from others. In addition, I also benefited from the workshop on PC-SAFT equation of state. In conclusion, it was very well organized and educated event”. (Alay Arya)
