Alexander A. Shapiro has received a support from The Danish Agency for Science Technology and Innovation (Det Danske Forskningsråd for Teknologi og Produktion) for a new project. A support amounted to 2.281 t. DKr. is given to the project “ParPor – Particles in Pores. Stochastic Modeling of Polydisperse Transport”. The project deals with the natural deep bed filtration processes, where particles of the different sizes travel with the liquid flow in a porous medium and deposit there. Stochastic modeling of this process is a goal of the project. It is important for numerous applications within engineering (filtration, separations, chromatography), ecology (ground water flow, spreading of the contaminants and microorganisms, carbon dioxide sequestration), petroleum engineering (water injectivity decline, motion of reservoir fines, formation of the reservoir cake of the drilling mud). A new Ph.D. student, Hao Yuan, will start on the project in October 2009.
