The use of renewable energy, greenhouse gas CO2 and nitrogen as starting materials for smart biotransformation steps is expected to play a game-changing role for the chemical industry in the coming years.
ECOMO is funded from Horizon-EIC programme and it is a collaboration between TUM DE(coordinator), DTU, Fraunhofer DE, Eilenburger Elektrolyse- und Umwelttechnik GmbH DE and CNRS FR.
The role of DTU is withing Innovation Gate 2 – acetate switch, investigating acetogenic biological transformation of CO with acetic acid as the target primary product. The acetate switch will operate with a high specificity of more than 95% in a Trickle Bed Reactor (TBR) that can combine full conversion efficiencies of both CO and CO2 with high production rates. This will be accomplished through development of specialized and highly tolerant to CO microbial consortia for acetic acid production from CO as well as process development that will favor high acetic acid selectivity and productivity.
