Electro - magnetic processing of fuel and water in processes in the maritime industry

DTU Chemical Engineering will test the effect of a commercial electromagnetic treatment system on marine diesel oil and water

The LAGUR® water treatment system is based on electro / magnetic treatment of water. In the spring of 2019, the LAGUR® system was fitted to the fuel tank line on a Molsline ferry and there are indications of possible fuel savings.

The system was originally installed in 2017 on the fresh water line to reduce lime coatings and bacterial germ numbers with success. There is currently no clear explanation for the observed effects.

DTU Chemical Engineering will assist Molsline by repeating the experiments on a stationary diesel engine.

In addition to fuel savings, DTU will also investigate whether there should be less particulate matter, SOx and NOx pollutants. The underlying principles of the LAGUR® system will be investigated based on the latest research in electro / magnetic fields and their effects on liquids.

Current literature indicates that a pulsed electric field reduce weak intra-molecular forces, thus lowering energy required to evaporate the fuel prior to combustion.

Expected results
Potentially, the project may influence the optimization of a wide variety of processes in which surface interactions between liquids, particles and gas phase play a key role (such as fuel dispersion in a combustion chamber).

The maritime industry is an obvious sector to investigate whether these new effects can be traced by carrying out full-scale processes with large mass flows. DTU Chemical Engineering hope to be able to propose measures that can optimize the performance of fuel and water processes on M / F Samsø and DTU Aqua's vessels.

The project duration is 1 year and is funded by the Danish Maritime foundation and Mols line
