Biogas Upgrading (Carbon Capture) simulation through experimental work and thermodynamic modelling

Denmark has a great need to substitute our declining North Sea gas production by cleaner alternative fuels.

There is potential to substitute 10% of our fossil fuel usage by sustainable biogas. Biogas is produced from biological resources like manure and wastewater sludge. Untreated, it typically contains 30% to 40% CO2 and impurities. Biogas can be upgraded to bio-methane, which permits distribution through the natural gas grid.

The purpose of the project is to create and demonstrate a financially viable technology, which will enable the upgrading of biogas to natural gas grid quality and simultaneously permit the reuse of the CO2 for other purposes, such as synthetic biofuel and in food industry.

The aim of the project is to develop a simulation engine, which will furtherly be used in the BioCO2 project for process design, simulation, and optimization.

The project involves expansion of the existing DTU software. The development will include a new DTU solvent technology, which has proven to give reduced energy consumption during solvent regeneration.

Extension of the existing thermodynamic models and determination of measurements in the lab in relation to CO2 solvent properties (VLE, SLE, heat of absorption etc.) are required for the software development. One of the final tasks involves initialization of Aspen Plus process simulation in close collaboration with Union Engineering and a member of DTU.

The project requires collaboration with members of DTU and gain experience from the existing thermodynamic and experimental knowhow at DTU. Applying this knowledge, a rate-based model for process simulation is expected to be developed.
