WP4 - Engineering analysis of proposed platform

This project is part of a large project, SYNFERON: which is focused on applying mixed microbial consortia on syngas fermentation to liquid and gaseous biofuel, design of novel bioreactors and use of suitable surfactants for increasing the gas/liquid mass transfer efficiency, use of biomimetic membranes and development of diabatic distillation cost-efficient purification and development of an optimized process design and comparison with existing technologies.

The SYNFERON work packages are:

  • Biomass Gasification
  • Microbial fermentation of syngas.
  • Concentrating and separation for liquid alcohols
  • Engineering analysis of proposed platform

This PhD project is encompassed in SYNFERON WP4 and the objectives are:

  • Investigation of the current technologies in syngas fermentation for fuel production, collecting data from scientific literature and patents
  • Process simulation of the designs currently available (so far, only three companies, INEOS Bio, Coskata and LanzaTech have reported the operation of pilot or full scale facilities)
  • Define thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for modeling the syngas fermentation systems
  • Collect data/models from literature and implement them in the process simulations in order to gain accuracy and capability in the estimations
  • Collect data/models from the other team members in order to simulate the process and technologies developed within the SYNFERON project
  • Conduct simulation of different possible layouts and perform pinch analysis for determining the highest possible efficiency
  • The global aim is to compare several different syngas fermentation designs and benchmarking the performance of the various technologies from a mass, energy, economic and engineering point of view
